JACKSON, Wyo. — With increasing snow predicted in Jackson Hole, PAWS reminds the community to winter recreate responsibly, and to keep pets safe in colder temperatures.

Here is a checklist for winter wildlife safety and how to recreate responsibly with a pet.

  • Check restrictions about where pets can recreate: Various recreation areas have winter wildlife closures crucial to the survival of wildlife. Read trailhead signage to check for closures and leash requirements.
  • Turn around if there is wildlife on the trail: Respect the local wildlife by giving them space and keeping dog(s) close. If a pet does not have a reliable recall, keep them on a leash even outside the required leash zones.
  • Pack it out: Help keep poop off the trail and in the trash by carrying waste bags until returning to the trailhead.

With all the new snow and dropping temperatures, it is essential to keep the well-being of pets in mind. Here are some cold-weather safety tips for furry companions.

  • Dress appropriately: Consider jackets for short-haired breeds.
  • Provide a warm shelter: Ensure your pet has a well-insulated space to escape the elements. View how to build a DIY cat shelter here.
  • Protect a pet’s paws: Booties are the best way to keep paws protected from contact with salt or chemicals, and to prevent snow and ice from lodging between toes. If boots aren’t suitable, try a paw balm like Musher’s or even some cooking spray like PAM to help prevent snow buildup.
  • Limit outdoor time: Keep walks shorter in extreme cold and be mindful of wind chill.
  • Update ID: Snow can cover scents and make it harder for dogs to find their way home if they get lost. Be sure all pets have an ID tag with current contact information.
