JACKSON, Wyo. — The Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation Department issued an update Tuesday regarding its service plans for trail grooming and ice rink maintenance.

According to Parks and Rec, the snow this past weekend was not quite enough to begin packing ice rinks. Once colder temperatures arrive, it typically takes about a week to get the surfaces ready for skating.

Grooming activities also require a good base of snow to begin packing, Parks and Rec said via press release. If temperatures cool off and just a little more snow arrives in the coming weeks, staff will start packing Cache and Game with the snowmobile and groomer. The snowmobile and pull behind groomer is used until snow depths can support the Pisten Bully (PB) groomer. Temperatures also play a big part in what type of base is packed down, dry powder versus wet heavy snow or something in between.

The town is nearly a month behind last year with respect to snow cover. When snow finally arrives, Parks and Rec will work to get sidewalks/pathways cleared, ice built and trails groomed. Residents can use this window of weather to ensure clear sidewalks and streets. Parks and Rec describes the current situation as being a bit like the “old” days, when the town waited until December 15 to start grooming regardless of snowpack.

The grooming report can be found on the Parks and Recreation website. Parks and Rec will continue to update X (formerly Twitter), which is linked to their Ice Rinks’ website, to provide updates.
