WYOMING – Amid speculation Yellowstone Park superintendent Dan Wenk might be transferred to a desk job in DC, Wenk himself said recently he hopes to make the nation’s first park his last career stop.
For the first time, Wenk acknowledged the rumors and said in a recent television interview that it would be his preference to retire at Yellowstone. He also said organizational restructuring within the National Park Service (Interior Department) was not uncommon but this story became public when the Washington Post broke it in April, so he felt the need to address it.
Wenk has guided the park through two government shutdowns and growing visitation that has strained the park’s budget and infrastructure. He is also where the buck stops during last year’s Inspector General Office investigation into an environment of sexual harassment of female employees described as a “men’s culture club.”
According to the Post story, Cameron “Cam” Sholly is slated to take over at Yellowstone once the Interior Department’s Executive Resources Board makes the decision final. Sholly currently heads the Omaha office and is a former Army veteran with an extensive military and law enforcement background.
