JACKSON, Wyo. — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Riverton has put out an elevated fire weather warning for Western Wyoming.
These weather conditions will be widespread across the area in the afternoons on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8 and 9. Temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s in the region, with a chance of triple digits in low elevations, like the Wind River Basin.
Wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph are expected, and isolated virga showers will be possible. Virga showers occur when precipitation falls from clouds and evaporates before it hits the ground due to low humidity.
A red flag warning in Eastern Idaho remains in effect for Wednesday afternoon due to a forecast of gusty winds up to 35 mph and a relative humidity as low as 11%.
According to NWS, the primary weather variables that contribute to a red flag warning include high wind and low relative humidity that are occurring now or could occur soon.
The local fire danger around Teton County remains at “high,” which means that wildfires can start and spread easily.
