DRIGGS, Idaho — A horse that was stuck in the snow up to its stomach was rescued by Teton County deputies, the fire department and search and rescue in a team effort.
According to Deputy Starkey at the Teton County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), the horse was lost around 3:30 a.m. and was found about half a mile out in a field stuck in a 6 foot tall snowdrift.
“I put my snowshoes on, grabbed my shovel and we started shoveling,” Deputy Starkey says. “We dug about 20 feet of snow and we were able to pull him out.”
TCSO search and rescue team members used their snowmobiles to pack down the path to the horse so that he was able to walk back to the house. Deputy Starkey says it was an older horse that was in pretty rough shape after being out there for so long.
The horse in now back in his pasture and doing well. This incident is not considered a case of animal negligence and happened due to the horse stepping over his corral.
