PINEDALE, Wyo. — The body of missing hiker John Diepholz was recovered on Thursday morning, according to the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office.
At 11:30 a.m., Tip Top Search and Rescue members located an unresponsive male near an unnamed lake near Spider Lake in the Wind River Range. The man had succumbed to injuries that were consistent with a fall. The man was later identified as Diepholz.
Diepholz, of Minnesota, was reported missing on Monday, Aug. 21, after he failed to return from a planned 11-day trek that began Aug. 5. He was expected to return on Aug. 16.
“Tip Top Search and Rescue, and the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family of John for their loss,” the sheriff’s press release said. “It was not the outcome any of us wanted, but we can at least bring some closure to all involved.”
Tip Top had requested public assistance in looking for Diepholz on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
