Memorial Day ceremony, monument dedication postponed

JACKSON, Wyo. — Monday, May 25, is Memorial Day. Typically, on this a day, members of the community gather in the town square to honor and mourn the military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

This year was to be a special Memorial Day as a dedication of the newly installed Veterans Monument was also planned.

Was.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the current state public health orders in place and a concern for everyone’s safety, this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony and the formal dedication of the Veterans Monument on Town Square have been postponed. Instead, members of the American Legion Post 43 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4274 are asking all our citizens to observe a moment of silence at noon on Memorial Day to remember all veterans living and deceased.

“Both the American Legion and VFW regret to announce the necessity to postpone this dedication on Memorial Day due to the current pandemic,” said Ed Liebzeit, Commander, VFW Post 4274 and Member, American Legion Post #43. “We will announce the dedication date as soon as possible, but only when it is possible to invite the many people who have expressed interest in attending.”

The new obelisk on the square was refurbished and installed over the winter by the Town of Jackson and the American Legion.

“We will continue to be respectful of social distancing guidelines and limits on the number of people gathering for an event such as our dedication,” Liebzeit assured. “In the meantime, we hope that everyone will take a moment on Memorial Day to remember the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country while wearing the uniform of the United States military.”

Members of the American Legion and VFW will be placing flags on the graves of veterans buried in Jackson Hole cemeteries over the holiday weekend.
