Making it big on Broadway: ArtSpot looking for artists

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Do you dream of seeing your artistic creation on display for all to see?

Jackson Hole Public Art is seeking proposals for ArtSpot installations for the coming year. The ArtSpot is Jackson’s only public art venue dedicated to paying artists to display work on a rotating basis. The ArtSpot is seen by more than 30,000 daily-drivers commuting to and from the Town of Jackson.

Bland Hoke originally envisioned and built the ArtSpot as a stepping stone for artists to create public art pieces for the community while building their competitive resumes for public art commissions. In the field of public art, it is challenging to find entry-level opportunities to build a portfolio to apply for projects requiring prior qualifications. In fact, less than 5% of publicly available projects provide professional development opportunities for artists interested in pursuing public art. The ArtSpot is an innovative solution to this predicament, providing a highly visible venue, technical assistance, and a stipend to create work.

JH Public Art is seeking artists in Jackson and the surrounding area who are committed to making something amazing. JHPA is offering a range of stipends from $500 for simple 2-dimensional installations to $1,500 for more complex 3-dimensional installations.

To be considered for one of the next year’s spots, applications should be submitted by September 14 to [email protected]. Proposals will be reviewed based on available funding.

To apply, artists are asked to submit a sketch concept and 3-5 samples of completed artwork. Ideally, the ArtSpot changes over seasonally—on the solstices and equinoxes. If selected, JHPA will work with artists to develop sketch concepts into a final project.

The ArtSpot is equipped with a variety of methods for installing artwork. Artists are strongly encouraged to consider the lifecycle of their project, whether it is using recycled materials that can re-enter the waste stream, or identifying a future location for the project to live.

Currently, ArtSpot stipends are funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole. Anyone interested in sponsoring the ArtSpot should contact Carrie Geraci at 307-413-1474.
