JACKSON, Wyo. — Kelly Neubauer is well-acquainted with animal rescue. Fostering, adoption and involvement with the Animal Adoption Center of Jackson Hole have been integral parts of her life for nearly two decades, guiding her through some of life’s most demanding challenges. Building friendships that she considers family within the Jackson adoption community, Neubauer takes pride in the emotional impact that both her friends and the animals have had on her life.

Among these animals, Ella stands out – a quintessential street mutt. Originating from a shelter in Isla Animales, Mexico, in 2011, Ella’s initial weeks at the Animal Adoption Center proved difficult. According to Neubauer, “She was terrified of her own shadow, reluctant even to walk through the AAC’s front door.”

Initially fostered by Dr. Emily Knobloch, a longstanding local and Jackson Hole doctor, the trajectory of both Knobloch’s and Ella’s lives changed due to Knobloch’s terminal cancer diagnosis. Neubauer recalls, “There came a day when we all realized Emily wasn’t going to return. It was then that a strong intuition urged me to promise her that Ella would always have a home with me. Since that moment, Ella has been by my side.”

Years later, when Neubauer herself faced a cancer diagnosis, Ella became her steadfast companion through rounds of chemotherapy, illness and fatigue. Neubauer reflects, “During that period, I spent a lot of time at home, recovering with Ella by my side. She provided a quiet, powerful and unwavering presence through those challenging days. While the adoption world witnesses its share of heartbreak, dogs like Ella bring out the very best in us. They have certainly brought out the best in me.”

Neubauer attributes her own personal salvation to the Animal Adoption Center, believing that it has saved her more than she believes she’s saved any of the animals cared for there. “I wholeheartedly love that organization and contribute as a volunteer and foster whenever I can” she said. “They hold a crucial place in my life.”

Neubauer shares her home not only with Ella, but also with her other adopted, special-needs pup, Stella.

As the giving season of Old Bill’s Fun Run draws to a close, please remember that numerous individuals, like Kelly, and animals, like Ella, are supported and impacted by the services of the Animal Adoption Center.
