JACKSON HOLE, WYO – DJ and producer Mark Farina pioneered the “mushroom jazz” subgenre of electronic music, a series of eight volumes that he launched in 1996. Primarily a seamless downtempo approach to mixing jazz, house and hip-hop, Mushroom Jazz grew from a local residency to global gigs. Farina began in Chicago at age fifteen before playing a major role in building San Francisco’s house music scene.

Buckrail contributor Aaron Davis interviewed Farina a couple of years ago in advance of a local New Year’s Eve show [a full audio stream of the interview is above, or click here]. The interview covers interesting terrain, including using but not abusing technology as some modern DJs do, getting started in Chicago by selling mix tapes to support his vinyl habit, and how the club scene has changed in the last decade. This time, Farina returns for an evening of Halloween ghoulishness at the Pink Garter with four other DJs on the bill.

One of the local openers, Head to Head, is a drum duo and electronic music project now based in Seattle. They bring a dual drummer live performance combined with electronic dance music.

Halloween Party with Mark Farina along with guests Head to Head, Mr. Whipple, DoppelWolfganger, and GRND CNYN at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pink Garter Theatre. $25. PinkGarterTheatre.com.
