Play description

The Women by Clare Boothe Luce. What better way to celebrate a season that focuses on women in theater than this large all-female cast production.

“The author carries us through a number of varied scenes and shows us not only a somewhat unflattering picture of womanhood, but digging under the surface, reveals a human understanding for and sympathy with some of its outstanding figures. The plot involves the efforts of a group of women to play their respective roles in an artificial society that consists of vain show, comedy, tragedy, hope and disappointment.” —Samuel French.

Characters

Primary Characters: 5 society women, ages mid-twenties to early 40’s: Mary, with 2 young children, who believes she is happily married; Sylvia, who thinks her husband is impotent and has a little something on the side; Peggy, young and newly married who yearns to be pregnant; Edith, steady, stable and wise for her years; and Nancy, single and independent.

Secondary Characters: Mary’s mother, who offers lots of advice, not all of it welcome; Mary’s daughter (Looking for pre-teen or teen to play this) who prefers to be Daddy’s little girl; Crystal Allen, the other woman; Miriam Aarons, everyone’s frenemy; and Countess De Lage, a woman of a certain age, always in search of a new husband.

Tertiary Characters: Working women: maids, shop-girls, saleswomen, models, etc.

Several actors will be asked to play more than one role. So, everyone will have plenty of stage time.

Bring to auditions your schedule of conflicts including work schedule. If you would like to schedule an audition time, please contact Riot Act, Inc. to do so. Otherwise come anytime during the audition times. If you have a head shot and resume and/or a prepared monologue, please bring them. If not, DW will have audition forms and cold readings available. If you would like to read the script before auditions, please let DW know.

Dancers’ Workshop is also looking for a few people to help with crew including stage manager, costumes, sets, set changes, etc. “We’d love to have some men join us working back stage!”
