VICTOR, Idaho — The City of Victor announced Tuesday that the demolition of Victor Elementary School currently underway will yield souvenirs for locals who are interested in holding onto a piece of the building.
Broulim’s Fresh Foods, the regional grocery store chain that now owns the building, will offer salvaged blocks of limestone from the school to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Those who wish to claim a piece of stone are invited to to the city’s parking lot adjacent to the school (behind Refuge Taphouse) on Saturday, Oct. 21, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Demolition of the building will continue over the next few weeks, but the main stoop and entryway are still standing. Representatives from the City of Victor envisioned locals collecting a piece of limestone and taking a selfie in front of the entryway as a memento.
The City of Victor announced this giveaway via Facebook. The post also noted that the city and Broulim’s “are not liable for any damage to person or property that may result from taking a limestone block.”
This iteration of Victor Elementary School was established in 1941 by the Works Progress Administration, opening to students in 1943. It remained in use until 2020, when structural problems in the building led the school district to open a new elementary school.
Broulim’s development of the lot to accomodate a new 20,000-square-foot grocery store was approved by the City of Victor in 2021. Progress hit a snag in 2022 when they ran into rezoning issues.
