JACKSON, Wyo. — On Friday, Sept. 4, a new club dubbed the Heart Beaters Club will be tabling at the first Jackson Hole High School (JHHS) football game of the year. The club aims to get students certified in CPR, first aid and AED usage.
The club was started by high school student Metta Curzon and school nurse Bethany Shinder. The club is part of the national student-led movement: the CPR Ready Generation, which aims to help students have the skills and confidence necessary to help in a cardiac emergency.
“It began as an idea, but after we started to teach the classes I realized how important what we were teaching really was and how applicable it is,” Curzon said in a press release from the school district. “It is proven that starting CPR quickly can double or triple a person’s chance of life, and if the entire youth population of Jackson Hole can perform high quality CPR then the community is far safer as a whole. That became the mission, to ensure the majority of students can act in emergencies if they need to and hopefully save lives.”
The club will be recognized before the game begins, and then perform a skit at halftime.
