JHHS Broncs state soccer champs after shocking top seeded Gillette team

JACKSON HOLE, WYO – The Jackson Hole Broncs soccer team held home court at the State Championship held in Jackson last weekend. The Boys 4A team pulled off a stunning upset of the top-ranked Thunder Basin Bolts (Gillette) on Saturday for the state title.

The Jackson Hole varsity squad began their run on Thursday as the #3 seed in the tournament. The Broncs (12-5-1) dispatched the E Central Indians (11-6-1) by a 2-0 score.

The victory earned the Broncs a rematch with the #1 team from the east and arch rival the Star Valley Braves. Jackson had split two with the Braves during the regular season—each team winning on their home field. Jackson beat Star Valley 5-2 on April 11. Star Valley beat Jackson 3-2 on May 2. Star Valley then bounced Jackson from Regionals with a 3-0 win on May 10.

But last Friday, with everything on the line, first-year coach Matt Hoelscher’s team pulled out a come-from-behind victory in a shootout—Jackson 4, Star Valley 3.

The stage was set for Thunder Basin vs. Jackson for all the marbles on Saturday. The Bolts cruised to championship game with 3-1 and 3-0 victories over Kelly Walsh and Cheyenne East, respectively. Thunder Valley also sported an unblemished record headed into Saturday’s game—they were 16—0-1 having surrendered just 8 goals all season.

But Jackson found a way to get one past the Bolts’ keeper in the first half. The goal in the 33rd minute from junior standout Jafet Hernandez-Moreno held up as the Broncs held off a late charge by Thunder Basin to earn the win 1-0 and the state title for the first time at 4A.

All season long, the Broncs were paced by top scorers Charlie Hoelscher, Hunter Dewell, and Jafet Hernandez-Moreno.

Girls

The Jackson Hole High School varsity girls team did not fare as well as the boys. Once dominate, the Lady Broncs are in the midst of a rebuilding year with head coach Kristen Pizarro. The Lady Broncs have seven state titles to their credit, the most recent in 2016.

Jackson came into the WHSAA State tournament as #3 seed with a 9-7-1 record and a bit of momentum after downing Star Valley 2-0 back on May 11 in the consolation round of Regionals.

The Lady Broncs fell to Thunder Basin 2-0 in the quarter-final round Thursday. They were then blanked again by East Cheyenne 1-0 on Friday.

Phoebe Alva Rosa, Melissa Kussy, Holland Gaston, Lucy Kimmel, Hannah Freeze, Jacie Chatham, Yael Sangros, and Olivia McCandless led the way for the Lady Broncs all season. Lily Marvin and Sidney Nash shared keeper duties.
