JACKSON, Wyo. — Jackson Hole Fire/EMS announced on Friday, May 2, that residents and business owners could see lower insurance costs due to an improved audit rating conducted by Insurance Services Office Inc. (ISO), a for-profit organization that rates the fire prevention and fire suppression capabilities of fire departments.
The improved rating score went into effect on May 1.
According to JH Fire/EMS, ISO conducted field visits to collect information on Jackson Hole Fire/EMS’ fire protection efforts in the Town and County, then analyzed the relevant data using its Fire Suppression Rating Schedule. The rating is based on four factors: the fire department’s ability to receive and respond to fire alarms; review of the fire department’s equipment, personnel and training; the water supply system; and emergency communication systems.
Teton County wrote via press release that the ISO audit improved from a Class 5 to a Class 4 rating in the Town of Jackson and improved from a Class 7/10 to a Class 6/10 in Teton County. The Public Protection Classification (PPC) program ranges from 1 to 10, with Class 1 representing superior property fire protection and Class 10 indicating the area’s fire suppression program doesn’t meet ISO’s minimum criteria.
“Many Insurance companies use the ISO rating for underwriting and calculating premiums for residential, commercial and industrial properties,” Teton County wrote.
The ISO rating for Jackson Hole Fire/EMS does not include residents and businesses in Teton Village because they are served by the Teton Village Special Fire District, which has its own ISO rating.
Teton County urges property owners to contact their insurance company regarding this new ISO rating. A copy of the official letters from ISO can be reviewed by visiting Jackson Hole Fire/EMS’ website.
