JACKSON, Wyo. — The Jackson Hole Bird & Nature Club (JHBNC) is hosting a Winter Bird Identification & Christmas Bird Count Prep on Tuesday, Dec. 10, in anticipation of the Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, Dec. 21, that needs volunteers.
The Prep will take place at 6 p.m. on Zoom; the link can be found here.
Susan Patla, a retired avian biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD), will instruct the Prep. Patla worked for the WGFD for 20 years, based out of the Jackson region, and her work involved conservation planning and monitoring for a wide range of avian and mammal species including Trumpeter swans, bald eagles, common loons, long-billed curlews and Peregrine Falcons.
Patla will teach the basics of identifying the local winter birds and outline preparations for this year’s Christmas Bird Count.
In addition to identification, the Christmas Bird Count will talk about protocols, areas to cover and what birders can expect to find.
“This is a community effort, so join birders across North America and beyond in the largest and oldest Citizen Science project in the world,” the JHBNC writes.
