DRIGGS, Ida. — The Idaho Fish & Game is looking for any information available about a moose calf who was shot and killed just south of Driggs.
Rob Howe, Fish and Game senior conservation officer, estimates the moose was about a year old, maybe a year and a half. The female yearling was found dead in someone’s backyard and had been shot in her side with a birdshot — the kind of shotgun you might use to hunt grouse or other fowl.
“They end up dying a slow, painful death,” Howe said.
The nature of her death makes it difficult to know exactly when and where she was shot, Howe said. That type of wound can take a long time to kill.
“It could have been a week, it could have been three days,” Howe said.
Fish & Game is looking for any information. A reward is offered for information that leads to a conviction.
Howe also wants the public to know that wildlife concerns should be reported to Fish & Game. Call them before taking matters into your own hands.
“We’re here to help,” he said. “We share the valley with the wildlife that lives here as well. They’re a lot like us. They’re sick of the snow, just like us. Give them their space.”
