JACKSON, Wyo. — Join the Teton County Health Department (TCHD) for a workshop about the “hidden addiction” of problem gambling.

The workshop is designed to help the community recognize the signs of and find support for gambling addictions. It is often referred to as a “hidden addiction” because there are no physical signs like those associated with substance abuse: slurred speech or visible intoxication. TCHD said that people can lose their life savings or housing in total silence.

The two-hour interactive workshop is free to attend, and will take place at the Teton County Library from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 29. Register online for free here.

TCHD has opened the session to all community members. “Whether you are concerned about your own habits, worried about a loved one, or simply want to be a better neighbor,” TCHD wrote, “this session will help you: recognize the signs of gambling addiction; navigate local support systems; and build a stronger safety net for our friends and families.”

Licensed professional counselor Janel Witherspoon will give the main presentation. Eliza Perry, a clinical mental health counseling intern with Vista Counseling in Jackson, will facilitate a question and answer portion. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Online sports betting was legalized in Wyoming in 2021, opening up many opportunities for people to place wagers. There are also casinos on the Wind River Reservation. According to TCHD, approximately nine million adults struggle with gambling nationally. In Wyoming, 12% of people who gamble exhibit problematic behavior. The ripple effect is also noted by the health agency: a single person’s struggle can negatively impact seven to 10 people around them.
