WYOMING — Gov. Mark Gordon has appointed Bret Fanning as the new director of the Wyoming Department of Revenue. According to a press release from the Governor’s office, former Director Brenda Henson retired this year after serving since 2021.

Since 2022, Fanning has served as the administrator of the Wyoming Department of Revenue’s Excise Tax Division. Prior to that, he conducted and reviewed taxpayer audits for the Wyoming Department of Audit’s Excise Tax Division for 11 years.

“Bret’s experience in the Excise Tax Division and familiarity with revenue policy ensure this will be a smooth transition,” Governor Gordon said. “I want to extend my thanks to Matt Sachse for serving in an interim capacity since Director Henson’s retirement.”

Fanning is a Cheyenne native and earned bachelor’s degrees from the University of Northern Colorado. He also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Wyoming.

“Thank you Governor Gordon and team for this opportunity,” Fanning said. “I’m honored to serve the taxpayers of Wyoming in this new position. Along with our amazing Department of Revenue staff, I’m excited for the continued partnership with all of our stakeholders going forward.”

The Wyoming Department of Revenue is responsible for the administration and collection of mineral and excise taxes, the valuation of property, the wholesale distribution of alcoholic beverages and enforcement of liquor control laws.
