SUBLETTE COUNTY, WYO – The Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest has opened a firewood cutting area until August 30, 2018. Forest Service Road #10139 (Spring Creek Rd) on the Big Piney Ranger District near Snyder Basin will be open for firewood cutting of standing dead trees and downed trees. A valid fuelwood permit is required before cutting in the area. Cutting in this opened firewood area is only allowed within 300-feet of the road, and trees must be removed in less than 8-foot lengths.
Firewood permits are $7 per cord with a five-cord minimum purchase. Those obtaining a permit must provide an approved form of identification at the time the permit is issued. Acceptable identification documents include a state driver’s license, a birth certificate, green card, passport, State ID, or Tribal Identification. Firewood permits are available at the Big Piney Ranger District 10418 South Highway 189 in Big Piney.
National Forests across the nation have been providing a substantial amount of firewood for the public since 1970’s, which has continued to grow as more households in America are adopting a more environmentally-friendly route to reduce energy and fossil fuel consumption. Selling firewood permits also aids in fire prevention by removing burnable material from the Forest floor.
A standard cord is 8 feet long, 4 feet wide and 4 feet high, measuring 128 cubic feet when wood is stacked in a row. Fees from Firewood Permits are used for funding Timber and Forest Health Specialists, reducing residual slash build-up from firewood cutting, and maintaining popular firewood cutting roads.
