JACKSON, Wyo. – Molly Moon Thorn is a familiar face on Jackson’s music stages. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings this fall, she’ll be making music with a somewhat younger crowd.
Teton Music School’s fall Music Together® session gets underway Sept. 16 and 19, inviting babies, toddlers and preschoolers ages 0 to 5 and their grownups to sing, move, play and explore music together. Classes meet at 10:30 a.m. at TMS in The Center for the Arts.
Thorn brings a lifetime of music to those mornings. She grew up singing, playing piano, performing in musical theater and writing songs, and today performs throughout the region with Pet Raven, Chanman Roots Band and jazz quintet The Tetones. Her interest in learning and development also has family roots: her father is a psychologist, and her mother is retired Jackson Hole High School English and drama teacher Linda Moon (formerly Thorn). The fun of the classroom is only part of what makes the work so compelling. Thorn has a deep interest in early brain development and loves watching children build musical capacity in real time.
And there’s a lot happening.
Even babies are alert to musical sounds and respond to melody and rhythm. As children grow, they learn through watching, imitating, experimenting and playing. Music Together’s research-based, mixed-age approach is designed around different stages of development, giving babies, toddlers and preschoolers room to participate and learn in their own ways, together. Active music-making also supports language, social, emotional, cognitive and physical development.
In class, none of that looks much like a lesson. Families sing. They move. They play with rhythm and sound. A baby may watch intently or wiggle to the music. A toddler may spend one song joining in and the next taking it all in. An older preschooler may suddenly supply a musical idea of their own.
Thorn sees Music Together as the beginning of a musical foundation children can carry with them. TMS teachers notice when students come to private lessons with previous Music Together experience: they often arrive with a developing sense of pitch and rhythm, comfort singing and moving to music, and an instinct for listening and responding musically. As children grow, TMS offers many ways to keep building on that foundation through private lessons, group classes and ensembles.
Teton Music School is a nonprofit music school located in The Center for the Arts, providing music education for people of all ages since 2019. TMS is currently fundraising through Old Bill’s Fun Run, with community support helping fund scholarships, exceptional local teaching artists and programs from early childhood through adulthood.
