JACKSON, Wyo. — Two free clinics for elementary school kids to learn to play hockey will be happening this weekend at the Snow King ice rink, hosted by Let’s Play Sports.
Holden Daus, a freshman in high school who also plays hockey, founded Let’s Play Sports about four years ago, and has been putting on the fall hockey sessions for kids since then. One of his hockey coaches and a Jackson Hole Moose player, Drew Akins, will help lead kids in on-ice basics, drills and games.
The Try Hockey Sessions will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 18 and 19. Curious athletes in second to fifth grade can attend either class or both. According to Daus, there is “absolutely no cost” to attend. Gear and skates will be provided, but participants must bring their own helmet, which can be a bike or ski helmet.
“I think you can expect to learn the basics of hockey,” Daus told Buckrail. “It’s meant for new players, meant for kids who haven’t had much or any experience playing hockey. … You’ll learn the basics of skating, do a couple drills, learn to shoot, then we’ll go and play some games.”
Last year, Let’s Play Sports hosted two learn-to-play hockey sessions and saw between 10 and 20 kids at each clinic. Daus has plans to work on expanding the organization’s offerings to other sports like soccer in the future.
