WYOMING — On July 1, President Biden named 17 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients, including former Wyoming Senator Alan Simpson.

Simpson represented Wyoming in the U.S Senate from 1979 to 1997.

During his public service, Simpson has been a prominent advocate on issues including campaign finance reform, responsible governance, and marriage equality.

“The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the Nation’s highest civilian honor, presented to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors,” according to the White House statement.

Simone Biles, Sister Simone Campbell, Julieta Garcia, Gabrielle Giffords, Fred Gray, Father Alexander Karloutsos, Khizr Khan, Sandra Lindsay, Diane Nash, Megan Rapinoe, Wilma Vaught, Denzel Washington and Raúl Yzaguirre are also recipients.

Steve Jobs, John McCain and Richard Trumka will receive posthumous Presidential Medals of Freedom.

The awards will be presented at the White House on July 7.
