CHEYENNE, Wyo. — At the direction of the President of the United States, Governor Mark Gordon has ordered both the United States and Wyoming flags to remain at half-staff until July 10 in honor and remembrance of former Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated today.

Flags should be returned to full staff at sunset on Sunday, July 10.

Abe was the longest-serving Prime Minister in Japanese history. He was reportedly campaigning for a parliamentary election in Nara a city in western Japan when he was shot from behind.

“Abe Shinzo was a proud servant of the Japanese people and a faithful friend to the United States. He worked with American Presidents of both parties to deepen the alliance between our nations and advance a common vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific. Even in the moment he was attacked and killed, he was engaged in the work of democracy, to which he dedicated his life,” President Biden said today in a proclamation directly flags to be flown at half staff.
