JACKSON, Wyo. — The Fish Creek Fire burning in the Jackson Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) had grown to 7,798 acres with 0% containment by the morning of Thursday, Aug. 22.

That figure was over 1,000 acres larger than the 6,100 acres reported Wednesday, and further spread is predicted.

“Fire managers are expecting significant growth again on the Fish Creek Fire this afternoon with increased winds and warmer temperatures,” BTNF advised in a statement Thursday.

The dense smoke produced by the lighting-caused fire is causing low visibility on US 26/287 in Togwotee Pass. Drivers on that route are urged to use headlights and proceed with caution.

Residents and visitors in buildings along US 26/287 between mileposts 30 and 35, including the Pinnacle Dr. and Breccia Dr. areas are under a pre-evacuation order and are urged to be ready to leave the area at a moment’s notice.

Road and trail closures are in effect for the following areas:

  • NFS Road 30750 (Moccasin Basin Road) up to its intersection with Forest Road 30800.
  • Forest Road 30800 in its entirety.
  • Portions of NFS Trail 4079 (Cottonwood Creek Trail), Trail 4106 (Spruce Creek Trail), Trail 4078 (Moccasin Basin Trail) and Red Creek Trail 4105.

The Fish Creek Fire was first reported less than a week ago, on Friday, Aug. 16, burning on five acres in the remote Fish Creek Drainage area of BTNF.
