UNITED STATES — Sixty-eight large fires have so far burned 438,904 acres in the U.S., according to a statement from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).
Recently in the U.S. West, three new large fires were reported, two in Idaho and one in Montana. Currently, more than 13,000 wildland firefighters and support personnel are assigned to incidents across the country.
According to Buckrail Meteorologist Alan Smith, a record-breaking heatwave has taken hold across the Western U.S. since late last week, shattering all-time September high-temperature records across the West, including Wyoming.
Daily record high temperatures have been broken across Teton County as well.
“Record-setting heat, dry conditions and strong winds are expected in the Northwest, Great Basin, and Northern Rockies areas. These conditions will increase the potential for significant wildfire activity,” said the NIFC.
