Explainer: Voting in Teton County

JACKSON, Wyo. — Absentee voting is currently open for the primary elections in Teton County. Wyoming is a “no-excuse absentee voting” state which allows the voter to cast an absentee ballot for any reason whatsoever.

The primary election is Aug. 16 and the general election is Nov. 8.

There are multiple ways to vote during the primary and general elections, by mail, at the absentee polling site or on election day.

Absentee voting

In Teton County, voters can request an absentee ballot by mail or by calling the Teton County Clerk’s office at 307-733-4430.

Voters can also vote in person at the absentee polling site in the basement of the Teton County Administration Building located at 200 S. Willow Street.

The absentee polling site is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for 45 days prior to the 2022 Primary Election and 2022 General Election.

Absentee ballots are available for pick-up at the polling site. Voters must fill out an absentee ballot request form either in advance or at the office. If you want to pick up a ballot for someone else, that person needs to complete the absentee ballot request form or provide a handwritten note giving permission.

The polling site is open July 1-Aug. 15 for the primary election and Sept. 23-Nov. 7 for the general election.

The absentee polling site is not open on Election Day. Voters must vote at one of the designated voting centers on election day.

All absentee ballots must be received in the Clerk`s Office by 7 p.m. on the day of the Election to be counted.

Registering to vote

The State of Wyoming is exempt from the National Voter Registration Act commonly known as “motor voter.” There is no voter registration available at the Drivers License Division of the Department of Transportation or at any other state agency.

In Wyoming, voters are able to register at the polls on election day but the county clerk’s office advises prior registration so your name appears on the poll list on election day.

According to the county, the easiest way to register is to stop by the Teton County Clerk’s office.

If you know you will be unable to get to a polling site on Election Day, go to the absentee polling site within the 14-day registration cut-off period to register. You must be prepared to vote by absentee at the same time.

Party changes and address changes can also be updated on election day or in person at the county clerk’s office.
