WYOMING – The Pedro Mountain Fire is now 60% contained, and officials have deemed it safe for residents to return to their homes.
Road closures and evacuations will be lifted at 2 p.m. today. Still, any unnecessary travel into the fire area should be limited due to firefighters continuing patrol work, crews removing sprinklers and hoses, and heavy machinery working in the area.
A total of seven structures on four private properties were lost or damaged in the fire.
Crews spent much of yesterday securing hot spots near control lines. Crews also established an additional dozer line on the southeast corner, which increased the total acreage of the fire but helped with containment.
Today, firefighters are emphasizing pulling out sprinklers, foldable water tanks, hoses, and other equipment that was used for structure protection. Some crew members are being released and reassigned to other regional fires, like the Fishhawk fire west of Cody.
Some precautions to take when returning home: Drive slowly with headlights on and yield to fire vehicles, heavy equipment, and other traffic. Don’t stop in the road, and watch for hazards like damaged trees, debris, ash pits, and stump holes.
Before opening tank valves or turning on appliances, ensure propane and gas lines did not sustain damage and check all pilot lights.
