JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Dragging tail a bit this morning? Blame it on the time change.

If only Wyoming lawmakers could have pulled through with the bill that would have eliminated this bi-annual clock adjusting and become more like Arizona—who ignore DST on the grounds it would cause their air conditioners undue stress. Think of the regained sleep you just lost this past weekend.

Daylight Saving Time was first imposed during WWI to save fuel and picked up again in WWII. Later, the Uniform Time Act of 1966 made the additional sunlight order permanent, and it had nothing to do with the popular belief that farmers wanted it to increase productivity. In fact, think of the collective lost productivity with all of us fiddling with our oven and car clocks to get the time right.

In his fourth attempt to bring sanity once again to Wyoming and forever banish this ‘spring ahead, fall behind’ nonsense to the dusty annals of history, Rep. Dan Laursen almost succeeded with HB14. The bill would have kept Wyoming in daylight savings time year-round, essentially moving Wyoming to the central time zone. It passed the House but failed on the Senate floor in a 15-15 deadlock.

Even if the bill passed it would have required at least three neighboring states to also join the cause, and then it would still need federal approval.

So close to touching the sun and holding it there if only for an hour.

How does DST affect each part of the country?
