Central Wyoming College’s The Rustlers sent two contestants to the College National Finals Rodeo this past week to compete for a National Championship, and both of them qualified.
Karson Bradley qualified in Barrel Racing after a hard fight, and Nate Weyrich qualified in steer wrestling.
Bradley had to fight back from her slowest run of the long round with a 15.08. She bettered her times each run with a 14.54 in the second and 14.50 in the third round, placing her 12th and 9th in those rounds. She qualified splitting 12th, which is the last position to the short round and after tipping the third barrel she received a time of 19.60 with her five-second penalty. With a total time of 63.72 on four runs, she placed 13th in the nation.
Weyrich, meanwhile, came out with a vengeance on his first run, splitting the go-round win with a 3.9-second run. He followed that run up with a 4.5, placing seventh and 7.2. He qualified for the short round in sixth place, and after a 6.9 second run in the short round, he remained there tying for sixth in the nation with a 22.5 on four head.
“I am extremely proud of the way these two performed and conducted themselves at the CNFR, or as a matter of fact, all year,” said Coach Schrock. “They both went out there with a goal of winning the nation, and they both did their best and conducted themselves in a manner that reflects well on CWC, the community, and this program. It was also amazing to see the support the rest of the team gave these two.”
One teammate, Cole Trainer, was able to haze for Weyrich all week (a hazer rides next to the steer to keep it running straight). Weyrich and Bradley both rode horses offered to them by teammates that didn’t even qualify.
“We all love to win and that is why we do this,” Coach Schrock said. “I am so proud that both contestants did so well this season. I am also very proud of the fine young men and women coming out of this program.”
