JACKSON, Wyo. — Chabad Lubavitch of Wyoming has announced the beginning of construction on its new synagogue and community center in Jackson.

On Sept. 3 at 5:30 p.m., the Chabad Jewish Community Center of Wyoming will break ground at 265 E. Broadway Ave, accompanied by a ceremony with community leaders. There will also be live music, an open bar, mechanical bull rides and a bounce house.

The first phase of the project will provide a shul/synagogue and multipurpose room, a mikvah, four one-bedroom rental units, a rabbi’s residence and storage space. This phase is expected to take between 12 and 18 months to complete. Phase two includes plans to construct a Holocaust museum, space for Jewish weddings, Kosher kitchens and more.

The new center will be Jackson’s first building to be constructed with the purpose of housing Jewish worship. Currently, services and events are held in homes and office spaces.

Chabad Rabbi Zalman Mendelsohn calls the new project “a milestone for diversity in Jackson.”

“This community has been booming in the last several years,” Mendelsohn said. He estimates that about 500 Jewish people are living in the area, with maybe 200-250 people actively participating in services and events.

“The whole community is very excited about [the groundbreaking]. It’s going to be a beautiful event,” Mendelsohn said.

Register for this free event here. The first 50 people to RSVP will be entered into a raffle for a menorah made of a moose antler. For more on the building plans, see the Chabad’s website.
