SWAN VALLEY, Idaho — Caribou-Targhee National Forest (CTNF) announced that multiple lightning-ignited wildfires have been tracked across southeast Idaho this week.

CTNF wrote on Facebook on Friday, Sept. 12, that fire crews responded quickly to the new starts, and are actively engaged in full-suppression actions and risk-based tactics.

CTNF has reported on the following five wildfires:

Gormer Fire

The Gormer Fire, located 9 miles northwest of Swan Valley, is currently 1 acre. The smoke from the fire is visible from US26, per CTNF. An incident commander has been assigned and is evaluating resource needs.

CTNF wrote that fire behavior is smoldering and creeping with isolated torching. Due to the steep, rocky terrain and extreme risk to firefighter safety, both full-suppression and confinement strategies have been put in place to help ensure firefighter safety and protect values at risk.

Olsen Creek Fire

The Olsen Creek Fire (0.5 acres) is approximately 4 miles south of Wayan. A dispatched handcrew has reported that the smoldering fire is 100% contained.

Big Basin Fire

The Big Basin Fire (0.1 acres) is located approximately 6 miles north of Alpine. Fire resources, including 2-Helitack personnel, reported that the smoldering fire was at 100% containment, per CTNF.

Cromwell Fire

The Cromwell Fire (0.25 acres) is located approximately 5 miles east of Swan Valley, and was reported “controlled” on Sept. 11.

Ross Fire

The Ross Fire (0.1 acres), located approximately 4 miles northeast of Swan Valley, was also reported as controlled on Sept. 11.
