TETON VALLEY, WYDAHO – Spring has sprung and its not a complete ski season in the Tetons without what is arguably one of the greatest winter spectator sporting events of our time—Grand Targhee’s 18th Annual Cardboard Box Derby. Creative minds and adventure seekers unite! For an entry fee of $10, cardboard artists and mechanics can put their best slab of cardboard to work with paper, glue, tape, and string—but nothing else—to pilot their way down the derby slope this Saturday.
It’s not a race and there are not points for speed, though teams must finish with all team members on board (pun intended). Prizes will go to the top team in each category for adults and juniors: Best Overall, Best Spirit and Attitude, and Best Construction/Engineering. Registration is 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Saturday and judging begins 10 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Saturday on the main plaza. For a complete list of rules, visit Targhee’s Derby page.
Also on the list of spring events not to miss is the 7th Annual Grand Targhee Sink or Skim Pond Skimming Contest 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. on April 14, which is closing weekend for the resort. All participants will be entered into a raffle with some great prizes including Targhee Fest and Bluegrass Festival tickets along with a cash purse of $500 to split between the top skimmers. Entry is also $10.
