BIG PINEY, Wyo. — Bridger-Teton National Forest (BTNF) has reported its first wildland fire of the season.

The Horse Fire, burning in approximately 3 acres of heavy timber and slash on the Big Piney Ranger District, was ignited by lighting and was discovered on Friday, June 13, by a forest employee. BTNF notes that the blaze is located roughly 10 miles west of Merna, 10 miles north of McDougal Gap and 2 miles west of Prospect Peak, near the confluence of the South Horse Creek and Cow Creek.

According to the fire’s InciWeb entry, the fire is demonstrating “some single tree torching and creeping.” As of 3:30 p.m., a fire engine and crew were on the scene to suppress the fire, with a helicopter and eight smoke jumpers en route.

Smoke is likely visible from the McDougal Gap area. BTNF asks that smoke in the area not be reported. No fire-related closures are in place, and fire danger in the forest is considered “low.”
