JACKSON, Wyo. — Learn best practices for bear spray use with the help of a remote-controlled charging bear simulator known as “Robobear.”

A bear spray giveaway and training seminar will take place in Jackson on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. on the Teton County Fairgrounds, put on by the Safari Club International Foundation, Wyoming Game & Fish Department, American Bear Foundation, Campfire Conservation Fund and Mystery Ranch.

The agencies will give away approximately 100 cans of bear spray on a first-come, first-served basis after practicing on “Robobear” with inert bear spray.

“Robobear” will be deployed to simulate a surprise encounter situation, allowing participants to try their hand at spraying the charging bear. Biologists from Wyoming Game & Fish and the Forest Service will also be at the event to discuss bear ecology, conservation and “Bear Wise” conflict reduction.

“These partnership events provide a great opportunity for people to practice and become more proficient with bear spray and to promote safety as many folks prepare for the fall hunting season,” Bear Wise Wyoming Coordinator Mark Aughton said in the announcement. “We hope this effort continues to raise awareness and remind those recreating in bear country to be prepared.”

Additional giveaways will be held in Pinedale (Aug. 17), Lander (Aug. 24) and Cody (Aug. 25).
