DRIGGS, Idaho — The Teton County Idaho Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) alerted residents that a bear accessed garbage in the Creekside Meadows area in Driggs on Tuesday, May 13.
“We’ve received a report of a bear in the area getting into trash in the neighborhood,” TCSO wrote on Facebook. “Please make sure you are securing your trash and not leaving it outside for wildlife to access.”
TCSO also advised residents to be aware of children and small pets.
Bear Wise Jackson Hole advises taking the following steps to reduce bear conflicts:
- Look around properties and identify any unsecured attractants.
- Store all garbage in bear-resistant containers or in a secure building.
- If possible, keep garbage containers indoors until the morning of trash pickup.
- Secure livestock feed, chicken coops, pet food, compost and beehives. Electric fences are effective for securing many of these types of attractants; contact Bear Wise Jackson Hole for assistance.
- Hang birdfeeders in a way that makes them inaccessible to bears. See examples on the Bear Wise Jackson Hole website.
