JACKSON HOLE, WYO – Shutterbugs and tourists alike have been treated to rockstar bears in and around Grand Teton National Park lately.
Perhaps the most famous grizzly in the world—399 and fam’—have been highly visible as usual. Griz 399 has made a habit of sticking close to roads and other heavily-trafficked areas which has made for easy spotting and numerous photo opportunities.
The bold bruin was spotted recently stopping for pizza at Leeks Marina with her two cubs on May 27.
399’s preference for hanging out near more congested parts of the park has caused concern she or her cubs may be struck by a motorist. There is also worry that being so near people (the griz has always displayed a high tolerance for human company) might one day backfire if a tourist gets too close and the bear takes exception.
So far, though, the ageless sow has made it to an astounding 22 years old, but not without the same kind of incidents some warn about. One of her cubs was hit and killed by a motorist in 2016. And 399 also mauled a hiker as well in 2007.
The apparent effectiveness of the crafty sow’s strategy of hanging around roadsides and other populated areas of Grand Teton has certainly played a part in her longevity. It was speculated 399 has learned that being in the ‘spotlight’ is the best way to protect her cubs from aggressive males who will kill a sow’s young in order to mate with her. Male grizzlies are generally more elusive and prefer the remote backcountry.
Meanwhile, another grizzly bear dubbed “Blondie” has been out and about with her COYs (cubs-of-the-year). The two were video’d recently enjoying a playful tussle right in the middle of the road—much to the delight of dozens of onlookers.
