UNITED STATES — On Friday, Dec. 27, Senate Western Caucus Chair Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) announced that President Joe Biden signed legislation introduced by herself and Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) to designate the bald eagle as the National Bird of the U.S.

Despite its place in American culture, the bald eagle has never been legally recognized as the official bird of the U.S. until this week.

“The bald eagle is an enduring symbol of American freedom and values, and I am thrilled it is finally getting the recognition it deserves as our official national bird,” Senator Lummis said in a press release.

The bald eagle is an iconic species in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem; read more about their local populations here. To see photos of bald eagles by Buckrail‘s very own Nick Sulzer, click here.
