JACKSON, Wyo. — Jackson’s own Atelier Ortega was named one of five finalists for a 2025 James Beard award in the category of Outstanding Bakery.
Chef Oscar Ortega told Buckrail that he heard the news from chef friends sending him congratulatory messages. Ortega, who also owns CocoLove, is no stranger to major accolades in the food world. In 2009, he became the first Mexican Chocolate Master and represented Mexico at the World Chocolate Masters Finals, among other pastry and confection prizes. He also coaches the U.S. national gelato team as it prepares for another Gelato World Cup.
Chef Ortega said being recognized by the Beard Foundation was meaningful, as it’s a deeply researched, holistic evaluation rather than purely a product judgment.
“It’s not just about how good your desserts or bagels are, it’s about the good the whole business does in the community,” he said.

Ortega shared the statement he gave to the Beard Foundation.
“My driving ambition has been to elevate Jackson Hole onto the global culinary stage,” Ortega wrote. “This valley possesses all the essential ingredients: its people, workforce, breathtaking nature and robust economy. … We’re deeply invested in our community, and that support is reciprocated. From our own fair trade coffee plantation in Costa Rica to our involvement with local and state culinary education, the JH Food and Wine Festival and art events, we are committed to excellence.”
The pastry and chocolate shop is up against Gusto Bread in Long Beach, CA; JinJu Patisserie in Portland, OR; Starship Bagel in Dallas and Lewisville, TX; and Super Secret Ice Cream in Bethlehem, NH. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Chicago on June 16, which Ortega likened to “the Oscars.” See the full list of 2025 nominations here.
Last year, Jason King of King Sushi was a semifinalist in the category of Best Chef: Mountain (CO, ID, MT, UT, WY).
