ALPINE, Wyo. — A 47-year-old man from Alpine died in car crash in the early hours of Friday, Aug. 8, according to an announcement by the Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP).
Theodore Allen Filcher, of Alpine, was fully ejected from his vehicle and died at the scene of the crash, which occurred at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Friday, per WHP. Filcher had been driving a Toyota 4Runner south on US26/89 about four miles east of Alpine when the incident happened.
“As the vehicle approached a right turn in the highway, it exited the roadway onto the northbound shoulder and began to rotate in a driver’s-side leaning slide,” WHP’s announcement reads. “The 4Runner traveled approximately 300 feet before it tripped and rolled into the northbound lane turnout. The vehicle continued to roll multiple times before hitting an earth embankment and trees. The SUV struck a large tree, causing it to rebound back toward the highway, coming to a rest on the northbound shoulder.”
WHP troopers determined that Filcher had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, according to the agency.
“Speed is being investigated as a potential cause of this crash,” WHP added.
As of Monday, Aug. 11, 76 fatalities have been reported on Wyoming’s roadways this year, compared to 58 in 2024 and 88 in 2023 in year-to-date comparisons, per WHP.
