JACKSON, Wyo. — Choreographer Faye Driscoll and her dance company will be hosted by Dancers’ Workshop for a creative residency March 10–18 to further delve into her new work, a multi-sensory performance-sculpture made of bodies, sounds, scents, liquids and objects. Her newest work promises to stir emotions and challenge the boundaries of dance as a performance art form.
Driscoll, dubbed a “postmillenium, postmodern wild woman” by The Village Voice, is setting out to redefine choreography. She is a Doris Duke Award-winning performance maker who has been hailed as a “startlingly original talent” by The New York Times, and is currently the Randjelovic/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist at New York Live Arts, the recipient of a Guggenheim fellowship, a Bessie award and the Jacob’s Pillow Artist Award among many others.
In her newest piece, which will premiere in New York this spring, ten people – dancers, singers, and crew – enact a glacially morphing tableau vivant on a moving raft-like stage. Their voices generate a score that crescendos and resonates as they clutch, careen and cleave, in a space too small to contain them, spilling off the edges.
Dancers’ Workshop provides this creative residency to offer a theater space for Driscoll and her company to dig deeper and develop the work on The Center stage, while sharing in the natural beauty of our surroundings.
“I crave a fresh artistic perspective and allow myself to learn from each artist we bring to our community,” Babs Case, artistic director of Dancers’ Workshop, says. “There are moments in Faye’s new work that may be difficult to witness because it mirrors our current daily existence too closely. Art is meant to propel our emotions into actions. Residencies such as this are invaluable to artists as they transfer their work from studio to stage.”
