FREMONT COUNTY, Wyo. — A 76-year-old California man is missing in the Wind River mountains, according to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO).
The man was reported missing on Saturday, Sept. 2, around 4:30 p.m., according to the FCSO. He had apparently become separated from his group while hiking near Steamboat Lake in a remote area of the mountains on the Wind River Reservation.
Search and rescue efforts are underway, with weather causing delays in operations. The search is a collaboration between Fremont County Search and Rescue crews and the Tribal Game and Fish Department.
Crews searched by helicopter beginning the morning of Sunday, Sept. 3.
“Weather conditions have severely impacted the search effort as thunderstorms have moved through the area and limited the ability to conduct air operations at times,” FCSO said via press release.
A Facebook post shared by the hiker’s niece identifies the man as Steve. He was reportedly wearing a green jacket and a black, blue and green Patagonia fleece.
