JACKSON, Wyo. — Six Wyoming high school students were selected as semifinalists for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, including one local from Jackson.

“I want to congratulate the six Wyoming high school students who were selected as semifinalists in the 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program,” said Governor Mark Gordon. “They are among 615 other students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, literary, performing arts, career and technical fields. These students represent the excellence of Wyoming’s education system and have bright futures.”

Scholars are chosen on the basis of their accomplishments in many areas—academic and artistic success, accomplishment in career and technical fields, leadership and involvement in school and the community.

Semifinalists:

  • Ryan Brinda, Lander – Lander Valley High School
  • Megan Ruth Dufault, Jackson – Jackson Hole High School
  • Alexa Christianna Mazur, Lander – Lander Valley High School
  • Sam D. Miller, Laramie – Laramie High School
  • Anna Lucille Steele, Cheyenne – Cheyenne Central High School
  • Michael Ryan Stoll, Mountain View – Mountain View High School

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.

In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields.

Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.
