YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — On May 4, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) announced the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River will be one of 12 featured stamps for the new collection of Waterfall Forever stamps.
A press release from the USPS said the stamps will celebrate American waterfalls, with each stamp featuring a photograph and the name of the waterfall and state. The Lower Falls stamp photograph was taken by Kenneth Keifer.
According to the National Park Service, Yellowstone’s Lower Falls likely formed as the river flowed over volcanic rock more resistant to erosion than the downstream rocks, which are hydrothermally altered. “Scientists continue to develop theories about the formation of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone,” the NPS says.
USPS Forever Stamps can be used regardless of when the stamps were purchased and no matter how prices change in the future.
The stamps will be free at the first-day-of-issue event open to all visitors of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). The event will take place on Tuesday, June 13, at 11 a.m. at the Canyon Visitors Education Center.
