YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — The Ash Fire, burning in the southwestern corner of Yellowstone National Park (YNP), has reached the size of 26 acres, YNP’s Public Affairs office shared with Buckrail on Friday, Aug. 1.
“Crews have made good progress in suppressing the fire,” YNP’s email read.
YNP is dealing with two wildland fires that are considered “active.” Like the Ash Fire, the Cutoff Fire was discovered on July 30. The lightning-caused fire burns near Mt. Sheridan and Heart Lake, south of Lake Yellowstone. It was 0.3 acres in size when it was discovered.
“In recent weeks, over 500 lightning strikes from thunderstorms have resulted in six wildfires in the park’s backcountry,” YNP shared in a press release about the Ash Fire earlier this week. “Firefighters have worked diligently to suppress all wildland fires upon detection.”
The park noted that it would issue fire updates if there are significant changes. Fire danger in the park remains “high.” See YNP’s Current Fire Activity website for details.
