MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. – A proposal has been put forward to install wireless internet networks and associated equipment throughout developed areas of Yellowstone National Park.

The National Parks Service [NPS] is requesting comment from the public regarding the Right-of-Way permit, applied for by AccessParks, providing internet service to park visitors and employees in hotel or housing via installation of more than 450 seven-inch antennas.

If approved, areas of focus for the technical upgrade include lodging facilities at Canyon Village, Grant Village, Lake Village, Mammoth Hot Springs and Old Faithful. Linking the proposed network to external providers would mean an additional 29 nine-inch antennas at various locations throughout those areas, a six-foot-diameter antenna at an Old Faithful exiting tower and two separate antennas atop a Mount Washington exiting tower of a two-foot-diameter and three-foot-diameter.

In an effort to conceal their presence, smaller antennas would be installed within attics or under eaves. Examples of typical antenna placements and a list of affected properties are available. And consistent with the Yellowstone National Park Wireless Communication Services Plan, wireless access to recommended wilderness and park road corridors would be excluded.
