YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. — Fire danger in Yellowstone National Park jumped to “very high” today and park officials are enacting Stage 1 fire restrictions, effective immediately.
Under Stage 1 fire restrictions, charcoal or wood fire campfires are prohibited in the backcountry, even in established fire rings.
Campfires are still allowed in designated fire rings in frontcountry developed campgrounds and day-use picnic areas. All campfires must be cold to the touch before abandoning.
Portable gas stoves and lanterns are permitted in areas that are barren or cleared of overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three feet.
Smoking is only permitted in enclosed vehicles, single-family dwellings, developed campgrounds, or day-use picnic areas.
Fireworks are not allowed in the park or any federal public land. Yellowstone reminds visitors that starting a wildland fire, even negligently, may result in fines and/or imprisonment.
Stage 1 fire restrictions also take effect in Grand Teton National Park, Bridger-Teton National Forest, and the National Elk Refuge.
