MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — On April 26, during National Park Week, Yellowstone National Park (YNP) shared before and after photos of the Temporary North Entrance Road and the Northeast Entrance Road damaged by the exceptional 2022 summer flooding.

Last summer’s 500-year flood event destroyed wastewater infrastructure, backcountry trails and bridges, power systems and park roads. Most notably, the North Entrance Road and Northeast Entrance Road had multiple sections destroyed that prevented access from Gardiner, Montana, and Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana.
In response to the road damage, emergency improvements were made to the Old Gardiner Road, the historic dirt road constructed in 1879 as the original entrance to Yellowstone, to allow it to become the Temporary North Entrance Road in October 2022. Repair to the damaged sections of the Northeast Entrance Road were completed by the same time.
While the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel’s wastewater treatment system is not completed and operational yet, the North and Northeast Entrances are open to all traffic with no restrictions.
