YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — Yellowstone National Park (YNP) announced Thursday that Beartooth Highway is projected to open from Red Lodge to Cooke City, Montana, on Saturday, June 1, weather-permitting.

The highway, officially US212, is currently open from Red Lodge to Vista Point, Montana, a 19-mile stretch. If weather cooperates, it will open entirely on Saturday. YNP said crews are plowing wet, heavy snow that has accumulated 6 feet high on the highway.

Hazardous winter driving conditions delayed the highway’s opening, originally intended for May 24. YNP noted that further weather events could still cause travel restrictions or closures to the highway, encouraging drivers to have flexible plans and watch for quickly changing weather conditions.

YNP visitors can check Yellowstone’s park roads website for more about travel within the park. Check for road status and updates on the Montana and Wyoming departments of transportation websites for travel beyond the park’s borders.
