JACKSON, Wyo. — This week, a WalletHub report detailing the unemployment rates of each state in the U.S., ranked Wyoming 27th with an unemployment rate of 5.9 percent. The state’s ranking is among the bottom 50 percent of states in the U.S. whose unemployment rates are bouncing back during the COVID-19 health crisis.

The report revealed that in the month of March, the state of Nebraska ranked number one in states whose unemployment rates were recovering from job loss, with a 2.8 percent unemployment rate. Meanwhile, the lowest-ranking state was Hawaii, reporting the highest unemployment rate of 8.6 percent.

As the country still grapples with job loss caused by the COVID-19, statistics in a report released by WalletHub, indicate that vaccination efforts in the U.S.  have helped reduced the rate of unemployment across the country. In the month of March, the economy gained 916,000 nonfarm payroll jobs, with the biggest gains in the leisure and hospitality, education, and construction sectors, which are gradually reopening.

“This overall drop can be attributed largely to a combination of vaccinations and states loosening restrictions. It will take far more time for us to reduce the unemployment rate to pre-pandemic levels than it did for the virus to reverse over a decade of job growth, though,” reported WalletHub.

Now, nearly a year after the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the U.S. unemployment rate sits at six percent. While the number is still high, it is much lower than the nearly historic high of 14.7% in April of 2020.
